Inspirations and ruminations

A collection of things that are of interest to me in general on a given day.
This weeks Inspirations and ruminations

In the interest of broadening my creative horizons, to attempt to gain direction and a strong point of view (real art college speak) I have been making a concerted effort to save photos that inspire my work directly, shapes, compositions, other artists and atmosphere.

Shape wise, I love triangles (yes very hipster) and crystals.

Composition

Athmosphere wise, I often try to portray a feeling in my drawings, here are a few photos that attracted me

Having done a bit of washing today (boring), I noticed how much of a thing I have for grey, in particular, grey sweatshirts/sweaters.
In their honour here are a few that I think are cool.

I like the casual/dressy clash in this look

You can find links to these and more of this sort of thing

As a way to have a little doss about on the Internet while looking at beautiful things and getting inspiration, I ,like many, spend time on Pinterest. As anyone who know me will confirm, I'm a big fashion fan, and because I have found soooooo much fab fashion by way of Pinterest I felt like sharing it.
But I have picked print & pattern as a theme.
Here are my finds

Delicate and Girly

Bold  & Bright

So Im back, nope I haven't been living under a rock, though it may seem that way and with the way the weather has been, we all might as well have been living under a rock.

What I thought I would share with yaul, as far as inspirations goes, is a Welsh artist who I learned about while having a pint with some friends (one of whom is Welsh) in a great little pub called The Royal Oak (must go there again soon), near where I live in Dublin

We were chatting about art and my Welsh friend told me about a piece of art she bought once and showed me the work of the artist. It turned out to be none other than Niki Pilkington

Since seeing her work I have followed her on Facebook and am a huge fan. Her work is so inspirational in the distinct style, creativity and very obvious talent. That's the sort of thing I aspire to.

The thing is if I was my own teacher I'd write on my report 'Jess isnt bad with a pencil but could do with doing her homework instead of just hoping to assimilate talent by looking at cool artists'

Here is some of my fave pieces

It has been a while since I have posted anything on the blog in the vein of inspirations and although my current obsession is interiors, I have, via my quest for inspiration in that area, found Pinterest. Oh I know, slow off the mark much!! But I have my reasons, I wasn't bothered until now.

This morning while discovering all manner of fab things I decided to look up street style to find some looks that appealed to me today.

And here they are

Although they are not all looks that I could personally pull off, they stood out to me and what ties them all together for me is that the shape & fits are features I would (attempt to) recreate.

My fave and probably the easiest for me to wear day to day in Dublin, is the black leather waist coat look, love it!

For some reason I have become obsessed with interiors. I don't know if its the spring cleaning bug hitting early or a new year, new home kinda feeling, or it could be very simply that the Christmas decs are down and I miss them so feel the need to add a few extra bits to the house to fill the gap. Whatever the reason, I have been looking at interiors.
One thing that I have found myself doing is looking for inspiration on the set of films. Sometimes I realise that I'm not watching the main character but the nest of tables behind him or the colour scheme of the room. I noticed this while watching  The Wire (vintage chairs), Mad Men (everything particularly lamps), Ruby Sparks (his whole home, inside & out), Life of Pi (Pi as an adults, home) and just the other night The Breakup (they have a really nice condo).

Another way to indulge my love of interior design in of course on line. Here are a few gems that I came across on my travels.

These I came across via

I discovered that by reading my new favourite magazine Wrap

Having not done a great deal of drawing lately, what with all of the work on the Farmleigh Winter Exhibition, work being mad and all of the usual preparations and visitations  that go along with the Christmas build up, I haven't had alot to post in the artistic vein. However, I did find a pocket of time to do some, and that is where today's inspirations come from.
Given that I looooooove fashion illustrations and looooove retro fashion illustrations, I looked at these for inspiration. These works along with Unseen Vogue (an amazing book & constant source of inspiration for me) really did inspire me.

Here is some of what I looked at. Now it has been a while since I saved the illustrations so I'm sorry that I do not have the links to them, but  Googling 50's fashion illustration will help you find them.

It is time to admit that it is getting cold, which is particularly hard for me seen as I am just back form a glorious week in Carcassonne.

But as anyone who knows me will tell you, I do love an aul scarf. See as far as winter goes, I actually look forward to winter fashion. And seen as I'm currently gathering inspiration for an up coming winter themed exhibition I thought I would share some of my finds with you.

What I have here are, very simply, looks that I like, and would be inspired by.

Love the layering

This look is softer than Id usually do but seeing it here I will be trying it, I love it on this girl, fab hair and beautiful tones.

Again with the layering, I like this day time look and sure where would one be without a bit of check in the winter.

I actually love all of this. If I had to pick, the brown belt really brings it together, but them I am an accessory fan.

Simple & chic

Cosy & cool, amazing scarf, I do love a huge scarf.

Fab coat, I think Ill be getting out my faux fur soon.

Winter & capes, a match made in heaven.

The sun has been shining on Dublin for a good few days now, it could be to do with this or simply the fact that I love yellow, that I have decided to thrall the Internet for the coolest yellow fashion that I can find.

Here is my bounty.....

 Yellow coat, want!
Yellow Scarf, need to brighten up the Irish winter
Yellow shoes, that I would loove to be able to wear out & about but we all know thats not realistic
Yellow trousers, if only I was 6 foot & built like a model, alas a lil lass of 5ft 1 cannot carry this look off
Yellow top, now this look I'd definitely try.
Yellow dresses, well they speak for themselves
Yellow top & jeans, chic or what?
Yellow Accessory, now what better way to complete an outfit? This is a Saturday night look that I will be trying.

I am doing it again, yet another blog post that is fashion related.
I just cant help it.
The thing is since I have started putting up fashiony stuff on the blog I have begun to take waaaaay more notice of street fashion.
So many times I have been out & about and seen some cool people and wished I had a camera.
Get one, I hear you say, well I have a camera but I don't think I have it in me to ask random people can I take their photo for a lil blog like mine.

Now that I have struggled to find the types of street fashion that I like, while trawling the net, I'm actually considering it, a tiny bit.
It is not that its hard to find amazing style, street fashion and generally beautifully chic, cool people, but what I found hard was finding people who were not trying too hard, a model or dressed in high end designers,
here are a few that I did find interesting.

They may well be a selection of what I just mentioned but cool all the same.

On this weeks radar is very simply, accessories, more specifically jewellry.

I love it and I love to see what I think is cool & stylish accessorising.

Before I show you a few nice bits that I found (not easy I might add) I want to show you a picture of a girl who I saw at a festival recently. In my opinion, though it is not so easy to see here, she had amazing style.
Chic, simple and cool, no 90's festival throw back here.

And now for some jewellery.

I have to confess that I forgot to save the locations of the sites where I found these images so apology's for that it was not intentional.

This week sees me looking at  postcards for inspiration. To be fair postcards, posters and print have long been something that I have loved especially the types that are coloured in flat colour.

I was in a fab little cafe on Thomas St in Dublin recently and I saw an amaaaaaazing poster. It was for a festival  in Dublin's Phoenix park on 14th August 1983. (side note: I was raised on the music of Steel Pulse so maybe thats what attracted me to the poster too)

What I love about this is the colour combination, layout and style.
I took this photo with my phone, hence the dodgy quality,
but I just had to have a photo.

A friend of mine gave me some cool postcards a while back & ever since I have had them hanging in my studio, so they are there everyday to give a little bit of European inspiration.

The holy G rail

Fashion, my friends, I would consider a religion, in that I think of fashion in the same way people think of religion, as a way of life.

OK OK so that's a tad dramatic but I do have a tendency to recognise days of fashion religious importance. One of them being the bi annual pilgrimage to a particular sample sale. (actually bi annual is a bit of a lie I go at least 4 times a year)

Now this sample sale, and the spreading of its word has led to many friends & family (obviously very stylish people) to flock to witness its wonders.

The big draw for me at the moment is the Gestuz rail! This is a seriously cool label that I pretty much wear most days.

What do I like about it? Well I think its the fact that has a edgy, rocky, relaxed feel while using fabrics that hang really well and are on the glamorous side without being too dressy. I'm a big fan of their muted colour schemes and last but by no means least, the leather! Oh the leather, they have some super leather pieces in every collection.

Sure have a look for yourself.

The images above were found here, here, here & here & here.

Illustration Books

Both these books were my source of inspiration last night.
The Big Book of Fashion Illustration, Martin Dawber & Fashion Drawing, Patrick John Ireland

Fashion (again)

I have decided to do another fashion feature on my Inspiration page, simply because I want to, plus searching the net for style inspirations is inspiring (sorry couldn't resist).
Although I looked at tonnes, the two blogs/websites that I was most drawn to, which is where I got the images, were http://streettonic.blogspot.com/
and http://geekychic.ca/
Ill keep this on short & sweet. Here are some images I found that I thought were cool.

This is my favourite.

Im a sucker for yellow at the moment

Fashion

Having recently had a huge amount of fun at a sample sale, immersing myself in fashion, and what with the spring being here so we can actually wear less than 27 layers hidden under coats I feel the need to showcase a bit of fashion on the blog.

Now there are many fashion labels that I love, but where I really love to get inspiration is from the streets so here are a few photos that I found on line. I did have an angle, and that was Paris street style, simply because I love France & of course because there are some seriously chic, cool and stylish people there.
I just really liked how this lot were put together.

Maser

Though I have long been a fan of the work of the Dublin street artist, Maser, his work has come to my attention again recently on the discovery of his facebook page, which I'm sure has been there for ages but I never noticed.  Anyway, what is it about his work that I am drawn to? Beside the fact that it is inspiring I guess its his use of colour, scale, lack of obvious outline, and in particular his fonts. The sophisticated style of his work always attracts me to it.

This piece is probably my favourite piece. Its on the Button Factory in Temple Bar.
